Project School Supplies

Picture
Project School Supplies' is a grass roots organization in Copan, Honduras.  Good Neighbors Group has been working with its Founder, Ellen Finn, over the past several years, by sponsoring children to complete school, shipping school supplies, health related items, clothing and shoes, and contributing to building projects which provide permanent walls, roofs, toilets and sinks to local schools.  GNG also has contributed to purchase of beds to keep children from sleeping on dirt floors, tables and chairs so students don't have to sit on the floor, as well as text books to reduce the ratio of books to children from 1:20 to 1:2.  Each of these  projects aims to help children get through school by being healthier and giving the teachers the tools they need to teach effectively.  In Copan, many of the families are subsistence farmers, and children must help.  Many children don't eat every day.  Many children don't complete primary school, let alone go to high school.  Please read below about the three scholarships Good Neighbors Group aims to provide.

Please contact me if you feel you can help. No contribution is too small!

Marleny

Picture
Marleny is a spunky young woman , 18 years old.  Ellen has known her for 2 years and likes her a lot.  She would love to finish high school (already has two years behind her) and is the first person in her family to attend school beyond 6th grade.  She supports her younger sibs and her sick mother by doing domestic work, but has to pay rent, albeit very low, to live here in Copan while she works.  This cuts into her ability to save money for school.

Her grades are very good and she is extremely motivated!!

$225 will be enough to support Marleny through the school year.
Update! $75 has been received.  $150 to go!

Hector

Picture
Hector is a small guy, as you can see in this picture.  He is actually 16 years old.  He doesn't eat every day, and the malnutrition has effected his growth.  Coming up will be his second year of high school.  He only needs a partial grant to complete the year.  Hector's mother gets up at 3 am to make breakfast before she goes to work in the fields.  His father is hemiplegic due to a work accident.   There are 5 kids in the house right now and not enough food.  Hector walks an hour and a half to get to school, and studies at night by candlelight.  He works when he can in the fields and is super eager to study and to succeed, but due to some malnutrition, it is a big effort for him.    Yesterday i gave him pencils and you'd think i gave him a bicycle!

$275 will be enough to support Hector through this school year. Update! $75 has been received! $200 to go!

Dorian

Picture
Dorian is a super polite young man who who finished high school with great grades.  He has a single mother to support but wants to go to veterinary school.
He has a big grant but it doesn't cover tuition and uniforms... both adding up to about $270.

Ellen has created a dog rescue which brings in street dogs, gets them healthy and adopts them out to families.  A veterinary student in the area would be a tremendous help in this project and so many other ways.
